How Do You Heal from an Abusive Marriage?

By Sandra Smith

If you're reading this with a heart full of shame, confusion, or pain that you can't put into words — I want you to know something before you read another sentence.

I've been exactly where you are.

I Know This Pain Firsthand

I didn't grow up thinking my marriage would hurt me. No woman does. But I lived through an abusive marriage, and I know what it does to a person. It chips away at who you are. It makes you question your worth, your mind, even your faith. You wonder how you ended up here. You wonder if God sees you. You wonder if you'll ever feel whole again.

I asked all of those questions, from an abusive marriage to the loss of my son and more. And by God's grace, I found answers.

Healing didn't come from a self-help book or a ten-step program. It came when I finally understood who I was in Jesus Christ. The abuse had given me a false identity — one built on shame and fear.

But Scripture tells us something completely different:

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" — 2 Corinthians 5:17

That verse became my lifeline. It still is.

Healing Is Real, But It Takes Time

I won't pretend healing happens overnight. It doesn't. But it does happen, and here is what I learned along the way.

Let yourself grieve. What happened to you was real, and it hurt. You don't have to rush past the pain. God is not waiting for you to pull yourself together before He meets you. He meets you right in the middle of the mess. "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." — Psalm 34:18

Get honest with God. Pray the ugly prayers. Tell Him you're angry, confused, or scared. He can handle it. He already knows. What He wants is your heart — open, raw, and real. That kind of honesty with God was where my healing actually began.

Find safe people. You were not created to carry this alone. A trustworthy counselor, a pastor, a support group, a friend who truly listens — these are not signs of weakness. They are part of how God restores us. He uses people. Let Him.

Rebuild your identity on truth. Abuse distorts the way you see yourself. The voice that says you deserved it, that you are too broken to be loved, that you will never be free — that is not God's voice. His Word says you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). That truth does not change based on what someone did to you.

Give it time, and give yourself grace. Some days you'll feel like you're moving forward. Other days will knock you back. Both are part of the journey. Healing is not linear. Keep going.

You Are More Than What Happened to You

One of the most powerful things God showed me through my own healing was this: the abuse did not define me. It was part of my story, but it was not the whole story. And it is not yours either.

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." — Jeremiah 29:11

God had a plan for me even in the middle of the worst years of my life. He has one for you too.

The Princess Series: Written for Women Like You

Out of my own journey, God put a story on my heart. That story became the Princess Series — a series of novels, each following a different woman in a painful walk of life, who discovers that she is a Princess in Christ. Deeply loved. Fully redeemed. Completely restored.

A Princess in Waiting (https://www.yournewlifeministries.org/product-page/a-princess-in-waiting) — Book 1 will take you on a journey with Cindy Lambert and experience the fear and heartache she endured living with an overbearing alcoholic husband and the loss of her youngest son. She finds herself alone, feeling not important and invisible. Have you been there?

The Princess in the Harlot (https://www.yournewlifeministries.org/product-page/the-princess-in-the-harlot-book-2-in-the-princess-series) — Book 2 follows a woman who has been ridiculed and rejected because of her weight. Her journey into her true identity in Christ will leave you undone in the best way.

A Princess Comes to Life (https://www.yournewlifeministries.org/product-page/a-princess-comes-to-life) — Book 3follows a woman who has been ridiculed and rejected for her weight. Her journey into her true identity in Christ will leave you undone in the best way.

Book 4 is on its way.

These books are fiction, but the healing in them is real. They are the kind of stories you read and think, That could be me. Maybe there is hope for me too.

A Prayer for You

Father, I pray for every woman reading these words right now. You see her pain. You see the confusion and the shame she has carried. I ask You to reach down into the deepest, most broken place in her heart and remind her who she is. She is Your daughter. She is loved. She is not beyond Your reach. Begin the healing in her today, even if she can't feel it yet. Give her the courage to take one step toward freedom. In Jesus' name, Amen.

You Are Not Alone

If this post touched something in you, share it with a woman who needs it. You never know who is waiting for exactly these words.
